In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the Harpswell History Hunters invite YOU to explore 16 sites across Harpswell, Maine this summer. Each of these places has had a major impact on Harpswell as it is today. You may enter individually, as a family, or informal team any time between July 4th and August 31st.

Pick up your map and entry card at the Harpswell Town Office, Orr’s Island Library, or Cundy’s Harbor Library during their regular business hours. Follow the map to each location, read the placard about its history, and record the secret code letter in the lower right corner of the placard. Once you have all 16 letters, unscramble them into a three-word phrase and add it to your entry form. Return your form to the Town House or either Library and receive a unique Harpswell History Hunter pin and chance to win additional local prizes. Prize winners will be randomly chosen from all correct entries submitted by August 31, 2026.

Questions? Reach out to our Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department at recreation@town.harpswell.me.us or call 207-833-5771.

Happy Hunting!

This is a lovely site. I recognize lots of places from my youth. I used to summer with my grandparents on Bailey Island, The Davis family had a house that burned down in 1972. It faced right on the main road before you turned to walk down Mackerel Cove. We could see Casco Bay and Mackerel Cove from the kitchen. Pretty sure it was built in the early to mid-1950’s.
